When Jaime Jackson entered wild horse country 25 years ago, the wild, free-roaming horse population far exceeded current government estimates.¹ A stable, genetically diverse population of wild horses is needed for our model's survival into the future. The AANHCP leadership has mandated a research agenda that will include an evaluation of Herd Management Areas (HMAs), a positive and working relationship with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), and close collaboration with wild horse advocacy groups and the university sector whose shared goals are to preserve this national treasure.
